Some people are experts at moving. For the rest of us, it is an intimidating and terrifying process. Most people get overwhelmed by looking at the big picture of how much work they have to accomplish. Breaking any big job into smaller, bite size steps makes it easier and less stressful to achieve. Here are the basic supplies you will need on hand for packing.
Boxes are of course the most obvious item you will need to move. Several companies sell boxes of all shapes and sizes if you prefer to have new boxes. Or, if you are on a budget, you can check Craigslist.com for people who have recently moved and are either selling their boxes at a reduced rate or giving them away for free. Bookstores, liquor stores, and grocery stores are another possible source of free boxes. Bookstore boxes are typically smaller, sturdier, and have easily accessible handles because they are designed for holding heavy materials. Liquor store boxes often have dividers which make them perfect for packing glasses or other breakable knick knacks. Grocery store boxes, especially the kind used by the produce and meat department are reinforced and have handles to make them easier to carry.
Packing tape and tape dispensers is another necessary piece of equipment for moving. Unless you want to keep track of scissors along with your roll of tape, a packing tape dispenser is an easy and convenient way to pack boxes, particularly if you are packing by yourself. Remember to reinforce the bottoms of your boxes before packing them. There is nothing worse than picking up a full box only to have the bottom fall out! For oddly shaped items, consider using clear plastic garbage bags to easily wrap and pack. Plastic bags can also be used as "filler" or to wrap breakable items. Paper plates work well between china plates. Or you can do what my grandmother did when she moved and wrap all of your glass in your bathroom and kitchen towels.
Most people who move frequently have a system for how they will mark their boxes to make it easier to unpack once they have reached their new home. One of my personal favorites was the color system. Simply put each room gets a color - yellow for the kitchen, green for the bathroom, orange for the living room, etc. This way you know what box goes where and have a much easier time trying to find the coffee maker once you move into your new home. Instead of using stickers or markers that can fall off or be difficult to see, colored ribbon can be a perfect choice to easily mark boxes. Another organization option is to write on each box all of the contents. This is the way my mother packed us up when we moved from the west coast to the east coast. While it was much more work on the west coast end, it did make life much easier once we got to our new destination.
