How Many Packing Boxes Do I Need?

Comments (0)

There are no hard and fast rules for deciding on the number of boxes, there are some guidelines you can use to arrive at a fairly good estimate.

First is the kitchen. The kitchen tends to be the biggest consumer of packing boxes due to the sheer volume of items it contains. The fragile nature of dishes and glass also means we pack less per box. A good guideline for the kitchen is to take an hour or so to rearrange all your cupboards so that all similar items are grouped together. Then count on one box for every cupboard. If your flatware is on the heavier side, you may need an extra box.

In the bedrooms, you won't need packing boxes for clothes normally stored in the dresser. They can stay right in the drawers throughout the move. Plan for at least one wardrobe box per adult family member, more if your closets are bigger. A good guideline is to have one wardrobe box for every closet bar up to three feet long. Remember, for moving purposes you can pack your clothes a little bit tighter in a wardrobe box than you would in a closet. You also don't necessarily need to box things like heavy winter coats.

For the rest of the house, assuming you have an average amount of belongings, figure on three medium-sized boxes and one large one per room. It's probably a good idea to limit the number of large or bulky packing boxes as much as possible. They are more difficult to move and pose a greater risk of back injury.
